U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his intent to end the war in Ukraine within a month during a phone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to Axios, citing informed sources, the call took place on February 25 and lasted approximately 30 minutes. This marks the first direct contact between the two heads of state since their personal meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos in late January. Three sources—one Ukrainian official and two insiders—described the conversation as "friendly and positive."

Sources indicate that Zelensky expressed gratitude to the White House chief for the ongoing support and emphasized that only the U.S. President has the leverage to compel Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to halt hostilities.

"Zelensky then said he hoped the war would end this year, to which Trump replied that the war has lasted too long and he would like to see it finished in a month," one source told the publication.

Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner also joined the call. On Thursday, both American representatives are scheduled to be in Geneva for a meeting with a Ukrainian delegation led by National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov.

Furthermore, one Axios source noted that Kushner and Witkoff might hold a separate meeting in Geneva with Russian special representative Kirill Dmitriev. Information regarding the preparation of such contacts had previously been reported by Russian media.

Zelensky earlier shared additional details regarding his conversation with Trump.
