Europe's most powerful nationalist political forces have broken with the Trump administration on Ukraine, marking a significant realignment that leaves American national conservatives increasingly isolated in their hostility toward Kyiv.
As "Hvylya" reports, citing a Foreign Policy analysis by Atlantic Council senior fellow Adrian Karatnycky, Europe's largest MAGA-style movements have increasingly leaned toward Ukraine and distanced themselves from Trump since his administration threatened Greenland and Denmark.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has remained steadfast in supporting Kyiv throughout the war. Nigel Farage's Reform UK party, now Britain's most popular political force, has taken a position hostile to Russia and committed to NATO. Poland's Law and Justice party has long been anti-Russian, pro-NATO, and supportive of Ukraine's defense.
Perhaps most striking has been the shift from Marine Le Pen. The French far-right leader, long seen as sympathetic to Moscow, supported Ukraine when Washington temporarily stopped sharing intelligence with Kyiv in March 2025. Le Pen called Trump's aid cutoff "very cruel" - a remarkable rebuke from a politician who once took campaign loans from a Russian bank.
The European shift has been accompanied by the decline of the continent's most prominent pro-Russia voice on the nationalist right. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban portrayed himself as a defender of national sovereignty while opposing financial support for Kyiv and seeking rapprochement with Russia. He now faces a serious electoral threat. Polls suggest he may lose power in April elections.
The contrast with American national conservatives is stark. While European nationalists have concluded that defending sovereignty means standing with Ukraine against Russian imperialism, their U.S. counterparts - led by Vice President J.D. Vance - continue to treat Kyiv's cause with indifference or hostility.
