Over the past year, Anthropic's Claude has undergone a quiet transformation inside the Pentagon. What started as a tool for summarizing intelligence and answering questions has matured into a system that generates real-time targeting coordinates for active military operations - including the ongoing U.S. campaign in Iran, as reported by "Hvylya", citing The Washington Post.
The Pentagon began integrating Claude into its Maven Smart System - built by Palantir - in late 2024. Initially, the system handled intelligence analysis, logistics tracking, and field summaries. Military planners then watched it grow into something far more powerful: a tool that suggested hundreds of targets, issued precise coordinates, and prioritized them by importance. As planning for Iran strikes was underway, Maven powered by Claude compressed what used to take weeks of battle planning into real-time operations.
The Trump administration dramatically expanded Maven's footprint. As of last May, over 20,000 military personnel were using the system across most parts of the armed forces. The commanders running the Iran campaign are veterans of earlier Maven deployments - from the Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021 to support operations after October 7, 2023. Navy Rear Adm. Liam Hulin said the system at Central Command pulled in data from 179 sources.
Claude's use has extended beyond conventional warfare. It played a role in countering terror plots and in the raid that captured Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. But the Iran campaign is the first time the tool has been deployed in major war operations - a milestone that experts say marks a permanent shift in how wars are fought.
"It is notable that we're already at the point where AI has gone from hypothetical to supporting real-world operations being conducted today," said Paul Scharre of the Center for a New American Security. But he cautioned that the speed comes with risk: "AI gets it wrong. We need humans to check the output of generative AI when the stakes are life and death."
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei acknowledged the scale of deployment. "I believe deeply in the existential importance of using AI to defend the United States and other democracies, and to defeat our autocratic adversaries," he wrote - even as his company's relationship with the Pentagon collapsed over disputes about autonomous weapons and mass surveillance.
