U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has issued a harsh condemnation of the current Spanish government, describing it as the "gold standard of pathetically weak European leadership." The South Carolina Republican's comments come amidst a deepening diplomatic rift, with reports indicating that U.S. military aircraft are departing Spain after the government ruled that its bases could not be used for potential attacks on Iran.

Reflecting on his past service as a U.S. Air Force prosecutor in Europe during the mid-1980s, Graham emphasized his historical admiration for the Spanish people, whom he characterized as "great allies." However, he drew a sharp distinction between the nation's history and its current political leadership.

"The current government in Spain... has lost its moral way, apparently reluctant to condemn the terrorist regime in Iran and have nothing but criticism for the United States," Graham stated on social media. He noted that while Spain has shown "righteous indignation" regarding Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, that moral clarity appears absent regarding Tehran. "When it comes to the long suffering people of Iran it appears that Spain is, at best, indifferent," he added.

The Senator warned that "history will note where Spain was" as the United States and other allies attempt to confront what he termed "the most bloodthirsty regime since WWII." Graham expressed his hope that the current administration in Madrid represents an "aberration, not the norm."

The dispute highlights growing tensions over the use of strategic European assets in Middle Eastern conflicts. According to reports cited by the Senator, the withdrawal of American assets was precipitated by Madrid's refusal to allow U.S. forces to launch operations against Iranian targets from Spanish soil.
