A terrorist attack rocked the city of Lviv overnight on Sunday, claiming the life of a police officer and leaving 25 people wounded. Law enforcement authorities have already apprehended the primary suspect behind the crime.
According to the National Police of Ukraine and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, as reported by Hvylya, the incident began around 12:30 a.m. Dispatchers received a call regarding a break-in at a store on Danylyshyn Street. When the first patrol crew arrived at the scene, an explosive device was detonated.
A second explosion occurred as a backup patrol unit reached the location. Preliminary findings indicate the use of improvised explosive devices. The blasts damaged a service vehicle and several civilian cars parked nearby.
The victim of the attack has been identified as 23-year-old patrol officer Viktoriia Shpylka. Originally from the Volyn region, she had served with the Kherson police before transferring to the Lviv region in 2023. Last autumn, she married a fellow patrol officer.
"Today, that future has been severed. Behind these dry lines lies the unspeakable pain of parents, a husband, friends, and colleagues. Messages left unanswered. A home she will never return to," the National Police stated in a tribute.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko later confirmed the success of a manhunt to capture the perpetrator. "Law enforcement officers have detained the suspected perpetrator of the Lviv explosions. She was apprehended in a district center," the Minister stated, adding that the total number of wounded has risen to 25.
The case has been classified as a terrorist act under Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The pre-trial investigation is being spearheaded by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in the Lviv region.
