U.S. President Donald Trump has said that negotiators on Ukraine are "getting closer to something important," urging Kyiv to act quickly.
Trump made the remarks while speaking to reporters about the Ukraine summit scheduled for this weekend in Florida.
"I hope Ukraine moves fast because Russia is already there. And you know, every time they take too long, Russia changes its mind," the U.S. president said.
Trump also cited casualty figures, noting that "27,000 soldiers were killed last month."
The meeting in Miami follows a week of intense consultations. On December 14–15 in Berlin, Zelensky publicly signaled a readiness to compromise for the first time: instead of NATO membership, Ukraine is prepared to accept bilateral security guarantees from the U.S. and European partners. The president also described a ceasefire along the current front line as a fair option but rejected Russia's demands for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Kyiv-controlled parts of the Donbas.
Following the Berlin talks, U.S. officials assessed the progress positively, noting that 90% of issues have been resolved and Trump is "pleased with the outcome." The parties discussed all items of the 20-point plan and achieved "significant progress" on security guarantees for Ukraine. However, the American side warned that guarantees similar to NATO's Article 5 "will not be on the table forever."
At the Miami meeting, the U.S. side will present the results of the recent round of discussions to the Russians. The Russian delegation will be led by Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, while the U.S. team will be led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Ukraine's NSDC Secretary Rustem Umerov is expected to meet with the Americans separately prior to the U.S.-Russia talks.
