Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Syria for his first official visit, holding talks with the country's President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus.
The leaders discussed the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region, exploring prospects for positive change. Both parties agreed to collaborate to enhance security and development opportunities for their respective societies.
Zelensky and al-Sharaa also addressed the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine.
"I am grateful for the support. There is significant interest in exchanging military and security experience. I appreciate the words of respect for our people," the Ukrainian President noted.
Special attention was given to Ukraine's role as a reliable food supplier and joint opportunities to strengthen food security throughout the region. Zelensky emphasized that he fully understands the current energy and infrastructure challenges facing Syria, expressing a readiness to work together to expand the capabilities of both nations.
In addition to bilateral talks, a trilateral meeting took place involving Ukraine, Syria, and Turkey. Officials discussed the development of relations across all sectors, with a focus on security and trade cooperation.
This marks the second meeting between Zelensky and al-Sharaa. The leaders first met in September 2025 on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. During that event, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani signed a Joint Communiqué restoring diplomatic relations in the presence of the two presidents.
Commenting on his arrival in Damascus via social media, Zelensky highlighted Ukraine's active diplomacy aimed at achieving real security and economic cooperation. "Important meetings lie ahead, with several substantive formats prepared. Every nation, every region deserves a peaceful life," he wrote.
