Regional tensions escalated on March 9 as the US Navy reportedly struck three Iranian vessels in the Persian Gulf, while Turkey intercepted an Iranian ballistic missile over its airspace.
Media reports indicate that the targeted ships in the Persian Gulf were likely oil tankers. Separately, footage has emerged showing an Iranian vessel on fire near the southeastern port of Bandar Abbas following presumed US and Israeli strikes.
In a concurrent escalation, Iran fired another ballistic missile at Turkey. The Turkish Ministry of National Defense confirmed that the missile entered Turkish airspace before being intercepted by NATO air defense systems. Debris from the intercepted weapon fell near the southern city of Gaziantep, with no casualties reported.
Following the incident, the Turkish defense ministry issued a stern warning to Tehran. While emphasizing the importance of good neighborly relations and regional stability, the ministry stated that any threat directed at Turkish territory or airspace would be met with "all necessary measures, taken decisively and without hesitation."
The official statement concluded with a firm reminder that heeding Ankara's warnings is in the interest of all parties.
