Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, who has built her political brand as a leading voice for national sovereignty against transnational organizations, has been cultivating close ties with Kremlin-connected figures while organizing a Washington conference attended by Russia-aligned political forces.
As "Hvylya" reports, citing a Foreign Policy analysis by Adrian Karatnycky, Luna has been consorting with Kremlin advisor Kirill Dmitriev and has invited Russian legislators who support the genocide of the Ukrainian people to the United States.
Together with Turning Point Action - the political advocacy arm of the grassroots conservative organization founded by the late Charlie Kirk - Luna organized a conference of the Alliance of Sovereign Nations in Washington this week. Attendees included opponents of aid to Ukraine from Germany's far-right AfD party and the increasingly Russia-aligned Georgian Dream party. The voices of a Ukrainian nation fighting for its sovereignty, Karatnycky notes, "are unlikely to be heard."
The contradiction is striking. Luna's stated cause - defending the independence of nation-states against the encroachments of multilateral bodies - is precisely the cause Ukraine is fighting for on the battlefield. Yet the congresswoman's conference brought together forces actively working to undermine that fight.
The broader pattern reflects a persistent tension within the MAGA movement. Self-identified national conservatives drafted a statement of principles in 2022 that explicitly condemned "the imperialism of China, Russia, and other authoritarian powers" and called for "defensive alliances whose purpose is to deter imperialist aggression." Luna's actions suggest a very different set of priorities - where "sovereignty" applies selectively, and Russian imperial ambitions receive a pass.
